Following the positive feedback received from the Hepatitis screening activity organized in celebration of World Hepatitis Day 2021, the EDCTP2 – funded HEPMAL project hosted by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), University of Ghana, collaborated with the Pan-African Health Advocacy Centre, a non-profit organization and the Ghana Education Service to organize Inter- Junior High Schools Hepatitis Quiz competition
Public and private Junior High Schools participated in the competition as part of activities to mark the celebration of World Hepatitis Day 2022. The objective was to get students interested and to learn about the causes, signs and symptoms, management and prevention of viral hepatitis. As knowledgeable students of the condition, they would then serve as ambassadors, creating awareness in their community. The quiz was conducted in two stages.
A total of twenty-nine (29) public and private schools from four selected circuits within the La- Nkwantanang/Madina Municipality based on the Ghana Education Service’s zoning structure were involved in the event. The quiz was conducted in all four of the selected circuits from 23rd June to 15th July, 2022. The winning school from each of the four circuits was selected for the stage 2 of the competition. Three students each represented their respective schools, with a total of 87 students for this first stage of the health quiz.
The 2nd stage was the final contest between the four winning schools out of the 29 schools that took part in the quiz. It was held on the 21st July, 2022 at the main conference hall of Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), University of Ghana. After four rounds of competition, students from the PRESEC Basic ‘3’ School won the final contest with 69.5 points. In attendance at this final contest were supporters from the various contesting schools, science teachers from most of the original 29 competing schools, officials of the Ghana Education Service as well as the staff of NMIMR, including the Director, Prof. Dorothy Yeboah-Manu. All four finalist schools received various awards including cash prizes and certificates of participation while the winning school received a trophy in addition.
